KATRA: The Board of Cultural Activities (BCA), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), in association with SPIC MACAY, organized a captivating Hindustani classical vocal recital by Padma Vibhushan Pt. Sajan Mishra and his son Pt. Swaransh Mishra at the Matrika Auditorium, SMVDU. The maestros were accompanied by Shri Harnam Singh on Tabla and Dr. Harminder Singh on Harmonium.
The father-son duo enthralled the audience with their musical brilliance, commencing the evening with Raag Malhaar and later rendering devotional bhajans dedicated to Mata Jagdamba. The performance was deeply appreciated by the audience, which comprised faculty, staff, and students of SMVDU, along with children from nearby villages.Prof. Pragati Kumar Sinha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he expressed gratitude to the artists for visiting the campus and inspiring the audience with their art.
He also encouraged students to nurture an appreciation for classical music, emphasizing its role in holistic education and personal growth. Mr. Suresh Sharma, retired District and Sessions Judge and Coordinator of SPIC MACAY Jammu, introduced the organisation and its mission to the gathering. He highlighted that SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) is a voluntary movement dedicated to preserving India’s intangible cultural heritage through classical music, dance, crafts, yoga, meditation, and more, with active chapters in over 8,000 towns worldwide.
On behalf of the university, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor felicitated the distinguished guests with souvenirs of Mata ka Darbar. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rakesh Thusoo, President, BCA, highlighted the significance of Hindustani classical music in shaping personality, refining thought, and influencing actions. The programme was ably coordinated by Dr. Rahul Sharma, Vice President, BCA, who delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the support and encouragement of the university authorities in facilitating such cultural initiatives. Backstage arrangements were managed by AYOGEN under the guidance of Dr. Poonam, Cultural Coordinator, SMVDU. The event proved to be a memorable confluence of devotion, tradition, and culture, leaving the audience deeply inspired.
