BARAMULLA: J&K Police conducted a comprehensive verification drive of SIM vendors operating within the jurisdiction of Sub Division Uri under the supervision of SDPO Uri.  The verification exercise covered all Police Stations and Police Posts, including PSs Uri, Boniyar, Bijhama, and PPs Kamalkote and Uroosa.

During the drive, Station House Officers (SHOs) and In-charges of Police Posts carried out on-ground inspections to ensure strict compliance with Department of Telecommunications (DoT) guidelines and legal provisions governing SIM issuance. The SIM vendors were thoroughly checked for proper maintenance of customer verification records, functioning CCTV installations, and adherence to biometric authentication procedures.

Most vendors were found maintaining requisite documentation and following prescribed norms. They were, however, cautioned to strictly adhere to Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures and ensure timely submission of documents to respective telecom service providers. Vendors were further instructed to preserve hard copies of Aadhaar and photographs of customers as part of their record.

All SIM vendors were sensitized regarding the legal implications of negligence in the verification process and warned that any deviation from the laid down DoT norms shall invite strict legal action. Follow-up inspections and continuous monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to prevent the misuse of SIM cards for unlawful or anti-social activities.

The verification drive forms part of J&K Police’s broader initiative to strengthen preventive measures and ensure accountability among retailers dealing with telecom services.
