Bridging academia and industry: IIM Jammu hosts session on financial statement analysis from an equity analyst’s perspective for term IV MBA Cohort

JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management Jammu, under the visionary leadership of Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu organized an insightful online session on Financial Statement Analysis from an Equity Analyst Perspective for the Term IV MBA cohort as part of its ongoing effort to supplement academic learning with practical industry expertise. The session was delivered by Mr. Satyadeep Jain, Lead Analyst for Cement, Metals, Mining & Utilities at Ambit Capital under the guidance of Mr. Ashwin Mehta, Head of Equity Research, Ambit Capital, and was moderated by Prof. P. P. Maheshwari, Professor of Practice, IIM Jammu.

Equity research, as emphasized during the session, stands at the intersection of financial analysis and strategic market interpretation. Far beyond a mechanical examination of balance sheets, profit and loss accounts, or cash flow statements, it requires a careful integration of quantitative scrutiny with qualitative foresight. Mr. Satyadeep highlighted how equity analysts at Ambit undertake the rigorous task of studying company financials, forward-looking statements and management guidance to prepare earnings estimates and generate investment recommendations in the form of buy, hold or sell calls. They explained how this process blends empirical models with a nuanced reading of industry cycles, regulatory contexts, and macroeconomic dynamics, thereby transforming raw data into actionable insights for investors.

The discussion provided the students with case-based illustrations of how analysts construct valuation models, assess risks, and interpret corporate disclosures, while simultaneously reminding them of the ethical responsibility that underlies equity research. By situating these practices within the broader financial ecosystem, the speakers offered a rare window into the way financial interpretation directly influences capital allocation and investment behaviour in markets.

The initiative reflects IIM Jammu’s innovative curriculum design, wherein up to 20 percent of the course delivery is entrusted to industry leaders to strengthen the academic–industry interface. Through such collaborations, the Institute seeks to expose its students to the lived realities of professional practice and to inculcate the skills of critical interpretation, analytical rigor, and decision-making under uncertainty.
