ANANTNAG, SOPORE: As part of its ongoing public outreach and youth engagement initiative, Police have conducted comprehensive awareness programmes at Government Higher Secondary School, Salia and Government Degree College Sopore. These programmes aimed to educate students and staff about the newly introduced criminal laws and raise awareness about the growing threat of drug abuse in society.
During these sessions, police officers explained the key features and objectives of the three newly enacted criminal laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA) — which have replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act respectively.
These programmes aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the new legal framework, highlighting their rights, duties, and responsibilities as informed citizens under the reformed system.
In addition to legal awareness, a dedicated session was held in Anantnag on drug abuse prevention, highlighting the psychological, physical, and social consequences of substance abuse, particularly among youth. Students were sensitized about the legal penalties under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and were encouraged to adopt a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The school administration appreciated the initiative and expressed gratitude to J&K Police for taking proactive steps to empower youth with legal awareness and guiding them towards positive social behaviour.
