JAMMU: To mark the observance of World Soil Day, the Directorate of Agriculture Jammu organized a special awareness programme for farmers at Krishi Bhawan Talab Tillo today. As many as 50 women and men farmers from different parts of Jammu district participated in the event.
Director Anil Gupta presided over the event as the Chief Guest and interacted with farmers on the significance of soil health for sustainable agriculture. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining soil health for ensuring higher crop productivity and long-term agricultural sustainability. He urged farmers to regularly get their soil tested and make proper use of the Soil Health Cards for scientific nutrient management.
Later, Soil Health Cards were distributed among the participating farmers. The Directorate also presented certificates of appreciation to the laboratory staff for their dedicated service and contribution toward providing accurate and timely soil analysis. Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by Agriculture Chemist, Vinod Kumar Sharma. He said “World Soil Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and enrich the soil, which forms the foundation of agriculture.”
Assistant Soil Chemist, Chander Shekhar Sharma, Assistant Biochemist, Deepak Singh and Assistant Agriculture Chemist, Ravinder Gupta were the Resource Persons. They highlighted the importance of soil testing, balanced nutrition and sustainable soil management practices essential for crop productivity and environmental conservation.
Farmers were later taken for a laboratory exposure visit, where officials demonstrated soil testing methods, equipment handling and the analytical procedures, giving farmers a practical understanding of how soil parameters are assessed to support informed agricultural decisions.
