JAMMU: International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed across Jammu Division to promote rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, develop an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for their dignity.  

The programmes marking the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities were held at every district headquarters across the Jammu region, featuring panel discussions and cultural events aimed at raising awareness and promote rights and perspectives of persons with disabilities around the Jammu region. The Residential School for Visually Impaired (RSVI), Roop Nagar observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today with great enthusiasm and participation.

Director Social Welfare Department, Ranjeet Singh was the chief guest on the occasion. He appreciated the outstanding talent displayed by the students and assured full support for their growth and all-round development.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome by the Superintendent of RSVI, Shamsher Singh. He highlighted the significance of the day and emphasized the importance of inclusion, equal opportunities and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities. He also underlined the vital role of institutions like RSVI in nurturing confidence, skills, and independence among children with special needs.

The students of RSVI also presented a colourful cultural programme, featuring songs and dances, which beautifully showcased their hidden talents and abilities. The performances were highly appreciated by all those present on the occasion

Addressing the gathering, the DSWO, Nawaz Sharief emphasized the special abilities and unique potential of the children and encouraged them to continue excelling in different fields. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a collective pledge to continue working towards building a more inclusive, accessible and supportive society.

The Director gave away hearing aids, wheelchairs and walking sticks to inmates to ensure their hassle free mobility.

At Doda: A special programme was organized at the Tehsil Social Welfare Office in collaboration with the Tehsil Legal Services Committee Doda. The speakers highlighted the importance of inclusion of persons with disabilities in society and discussed various government welfare schemes meant for their benefit.

A number of Assistive equipment were also distributed among the PwDs to support their daily needs and improve quality of life. These included walking sticks, hearing aids etc. 

Meanwhile, CSAM Govt Higher Secondary School Kilhotran  also observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with great enthusiasm and purpose. The staff members delivered insightful lectures highlighting the significance of the day and the need to promote inclusivity, accessibility and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.  Students of the institution also delivered speeches reflecting their understanding and commitment to the theme of the day. 

At Reasi:  District Administration Reasi, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department organised a special programme to promote inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

 Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik, graced the occasion and distributed 131 Nirmaya Health Insurance cards among Specially abled Persons, marking a significant step towards ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for persons with disabilities.  A brief awareness session on the features and benefits of the Nirmay Health Insurance Scheme was also held to inform the public about its provisions and coverage. 

At Poonch: The International Day for Persons with Disabilities was observed in Poonch with the participation of over 250 specially abled persons. Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma and Additional Deputy Commissioner Tahir Mustafa Malik attended the event and assured all possible support from the administration.

DSWO Khalil A. Banday briefed participants on various welfare schemes and reaffirmed full departmental support. Chairman all Specially Abled Persons Association Mohammad Fareed Malik presented a memorandum to the DC and apprised him of the Association’s demands.  

The programme was kept simple in honour of Operation Sindoor martyrs and the demise of Late Ateeqa Jan, DDC Member Mandi. Blankets were distributed among specially abled persons as a gesture of care.
