KATRA: Final-year B.Tech. Computer Science & Engineering students from the School of Computer Science, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, undertook an educational andindustrial exposure visit to the CSIR–Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO-CSIR), Chandigarh. The visit, planned under the guidance of Mr. Naveen Kr. Gondhi and Mr. Himmat, and organized by Dr. Sunanda, Head of SCSE, SMVDU, aimed to provide students with exposureto emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), system design innovation, and scientific instrumentation research, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-worldtechnological applications ahead of their placement season.

During the industrial tour, students explored various specialised research laboratories, including the Technology Block housing AI-enabled systems and precision instrumentationfacilities.

They interacted with expert scientists and observed real-time technologicaldevelopment processes, gaining a deeper understanding of how advanced systems areconceptualized, designed, and tested in a premier national R&D setting.Students also visited the Indo-Swiss Training Centre (ISTC) to learn about skill-orientedengineering education and industry–academia collaboration models.

Additionally, theyattended an insightful PRISM Program Conference, focusing on innovation funding, start-upassistance, and national research support schemes offered by the Department of Scientific andIndustrial Research (DSIR).This visit significantly strengthened practical learning, enhanced student motivation, andfostered research-driven industry–academia partnerships in emerging technological domains.

The visit was conducted at CSIR under the support and mentorship of distinguished CSIR-CSIO dignitaries: Dr. Narinder Singh Jassal, Sr. Principal Scientist & Head, BusinessDevelopment Group (BDG)Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Director, CSIR–Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Dr. Gondhi expressed gratitude to CSIR-CSIO for their guidance and support, noting thatsuch interactions enhance students’ technical competencies, research orientation, andinnovation mindset. Students described the visit as a transformative and inspiring experience, offering valuable exposure to cutting-edge research, start-up culture, and applied AIinnovation within one of India’s premier scientific institutions.
