JAMMU: In memory of one of India's pioneering scientists, Sir Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the founder Director General of CSIR, the annual Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Memorial Tournament (SSBMT) is organized for CSIR Labs. This prestigious event includes both indoor and outdoor games, bringing together employees from across CSIR’s network under the CSIR Sports Promotion Board (CSIR-SPB).

The tournament sees participation from around 40 staff clubs, representing 38 CSIR labs across the country, divided into four zones. Approximately 200 participants from each zone compete, with the top teams advancing to the finals. 

This year, the first zonal event of the 52nd SSBMT Cricket Tournament was held from November 8-10, 2024, at CSIR-NBRI, coordinated by CSIR-SPB, New Delhi. CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) delivered a standout performance, clinching the title in the zonal cricket tournament. The CSIR-IIIM cricket team remained undefeated, showcasing remarkable skills and teamwork throughout the competition. 

Director of CSIR-IIIM, Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, praised the team for their historic victory, highlighting their dedication and excellent performance. Under the captaincy of Dr. Nasir ul Rasheed, the team demonstrated exceptional focus and professionalism. Dr. Rasheed was instrumental in the success, scoring an unbeaten half-century in the final match. Other key contributions came from Sumit Roy, who scored a vital 50 runs, Krishan Mamwal for his all-round performance, and Mohammad Saleem, whose bowling proved decisive. Sumit Roy was named "Man of the Match," while Krishan Mamwal received the "Man of the Series" accolade for his consistent displays throughout the tournament. 

Dr. Zabeer Ahmed personally congratulated the team, acknowledging their commitment and outstanding performance. Rajesh Gupta, the team manager, played a significant role in organizing and managing the team's participation. The squad's collective effort was further enhanced by the contributions of Ajay Kumar, Mohammad Ayub, Ashok Kumar, Bikram Singh, Ubair Nazir, Karthik Kapoor, Moses, and Mateen Noor. 

Training and preparation for the tournament were conducted under the guidance of the CSIR-IIIM Staff Club, Jammu, led by Dr. Shashank Singh, Vice President, and supported by SR Meena (Sports Secretary), along with executive members Ms. Rajni and Manish Kumar. Their efforts ensured the team was well-prepared and motivated.

This victory not only highlights the sporting excellence at CSIR-IIIM but also underscores the institute’s dedication to promoting a healthy, balanced lifestyle among its members.
