JAMMU: The Veterinary Section of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today organized an awareness drive on environmentally safe management of Dairies/Gaushalas and adoption of Scientific Dung Disposal Mechanisms across seven wards.

Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) JMC Dr. Divya Sharma, along with officials from the Veterinary and Health sections, conducted the awareness drive. Dairy owners and gaushala operators from areas including Janipur, Lakkar Mandi, Chinore, Bantalab, Paloura and Durga Nagar were sensitized about the mandatory registration of dairies/Gaushalas operating within JMC limits and the need to adopt scientific dung disposal mechanisms such as installation of biogas plants, vermi-compost units and compost pits.

Door-to-door visits of dairy farms were also carried out to educate farmers on these practices. Dr. Divya Sharma informed that JMC has initiated several measures to regulate dairies and Gaushalas in line with the guidelines of the Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms. She also highlighted that dairy owners can now avail hassle-free online registration through the Jan Sugam Portal at www.jansugam.jk.gov.in.

At present, over 100 dairy units have been registered with JMC and the process is on to ensure regulation of all dairies and gaushalas operating within municipal limits. Registered units are required to comply with JKPCC and FSSAI guidelines by adopting scientific waste disposal systems such as biogas or vermi-compost units, ensuring proper recycling and utilization of dairy waste.

During the drive, notices were issued to defaulting dairy owners who were found violating the provisions under the Municipal Corporation Act, 2000. They were instructed to get their units registered with JMC within one month.

Dr. Divya Sharma emphasized the importance of adhering to the guidelines issued by JKPCC, JMC, FSSAI and in compliance with the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). She underscored that effective implementation of these measures would promote waste-to-wealth initiatives, enabling dairy waste to be transformed into valuable manure and energy resources.
