JAMMU: The Department of Home Science (Human Development), University of Jammu, inaugurated ‘Let’s Talk Health – A Student Health & Wellness Series’ on the eve of World Mental Health Day, aiming to foster meaningful conversations on health, wellbeing and the experiences shaping students’ lives.
The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Sarika Manhas, Head of the Department; Prof. Rajni Dhingra, former Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu; Prof. Neeru Sharma; and Prof. Samridhi Arora.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Sarika Manhas emphasised that student wellbeing extends beyond academic achievement and requires attention to the physical, emotional and social dimensions of development. Drawing upon the perspective of Human Development, she highlighted the need to create an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their concerns, seeking support and developing healthy coping strategies.
Prof. Rajni Dhingra underscored the importance of cultivating gratitude and recognising the role of professional help in maintaining mental health. Prof. Neeru Sharma highlighted the need for a holistic understanding of health across the lifespan, particularly during emerging adulthood, a stage characterised by significant transitions and challenges. Prof. Samridhi Arora emphasised that health should be understood beyond the mere absence of sickness, drawing attention to the role of healthy relationships in overall wellbeing.
The session encouraged students and research scholars to reflect on and share their emotional experiences, exploring the influence of social, familial and personal factors on their lives and wellbeing. The ensuing dialogue highlighted the importance of listening, empathy and creating supportive spaces where young people can discuss their concerns without hesitation.
The wellness series will feature expert interactions, discussions and activities focusing on mental and physical health, nutrition, sleep, relationships and digital wellbeing. Sessions will be held every second Friday of the month, offering students and research scholars a continuing platform for learning and dialogue.
