JAMMU: The Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management (MSCM), School of Business Studies, Central University of Jammu, organised a two-day workshop on “Data Analytics Using Power BI” to equip students and research scholars with practical skills in data analysis, visualisation and data-driven decision-making. The workshop concluded today and around 130 students and research scholars from the School of Business Studies participated in the workshop.

The workshop was organised under the guidance of Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu. His emphasis on skill-oriented education, experiential learning and the development of industry-relevant competencies has provided impetus to initiatives aimed at enhancing the practical capabilities of students and research scholars. The department expressed its sincere appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his continued encouragement and support in fostering a culture of innovation, applied learning and professional development at the University.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Vinay Kumar, Head, Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management, who highlighted the growing importance of data analytics in academic research and the business environment. He emphasised that the ability to interpret data and derive meaningful insights is increasingly essential for effective decision-making.

Drawing upon the Bhagavad Gītā, Dr. Kumar referred to Chapter 2, Verse 50: “योगःकर्मसुकौशलम्”—“YogahKarmasuKaushalam,” emphasising that knowledge acquires greater value when translated into skilful and purposeful action. He connected this principle with data analytics, observing that the objective is not merely to process data but to transform data into meaningful insights and effective decisions.

Prof. Neelika Arora, Dean, School of Business Studies, in her address, emphasised the growing significance of data analytics and interpretation in contemporary academic and professional environments. She highlighted the need for students and research scholars to develop strong analytical competencies to transform data into meaningful insights and support evidence-based and informed decision-making. She encouraged the participants to actively engage in the workshop and make the most of the practical, hands-on learning opportunities.

The resource person for the workshop, Dr. Bhagat Singh, is a Business Analytics Professor, Corporate Trainer and Consultant with more than 15 years of experience. His areas of expertise include Business Analytics, Statistics, Decision Science, Data Visualisation and Artificial Intelligence. The workshop is designed to provide participants with hands-on exposure to Power BI, enabling them to work with data, develop interactive visualisations and dashboards, and derive actionable insights for academic and professional applications.

The resource person was formally introduced by Dr. Arun Yadav, Assistant Professor, MSCM and Coordinator of the Workshop. The programme was attended by Prof. Bharti Gupta, Head, Department of Tourism and Travel Management; Dr. Gowhar Rasool, Head, Department of HRM &OB, Dr, Naresh Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of MSCM, Dr. Anju Thapa, Assistant Professor, MSCM and other faculty members of the School of Business Studies.

The two-day workshop will provide participants with practical exposure to data preparation, analysis, visualisation and dashboard development using Power BI, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The initiative is expected to strengthen the analytical capabilities of students and research scholars and enable them to apply data-driven approaches in academic research, business analysis and professional decision-making.
