JAMMU: The University of Jammu, under its Disability Initiatives, organized an inspiring painting exhibition titled ‘Canvas of Inclusion’ on the eve of World Disability Day. The event celebrated artistic expression by persons with disabilities, in line with the United Nations theme for 2025- “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Prof. Monika Chadha, Chairperson Campus Culture Committee, JU who emphasized the urgent need to inculcate principles of inclusion across all domains— educational, social, structural, and attitudinal. She further highlighted that art is a universal form of expression, transcending barriers of ability and becoming a powerful medium to communicate emotions, perspectives, and lived experiences.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head Department of Sociology and NSS Convener, JU focused on the specific challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities, emphasizing the need for targeted support, gender-sensitive policies, and inclusive practices that address their unique vulnerabilities. She further noted that art has the power to bridge social divides and create spaces where voices, often unheard, can be expressed with confidence and dignity.
The event was presided over by Prof. Rajni Dhingra, former Dean Research Studies who underscored the critical role of educational institutions in advancing inclusion, noting that universities carry the responsibility of modelling inclusive values, practices, and opportunities for all learners.
A major highlight of the exhibition was the display of paintings by Sh. Kamalnain Bhan, a renowned specially-abled artist, along with the creative works of budding artists with disabilities. Their paintings reflected exceptional imagination, technical skill, and compelling visual narratives that resonated deeply with the audience.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sarika Manhas, Coordinator, Disability Initiatives, shared that the exhibition was envisioned as a platform to not only celebrate artistic talent but also to deepen awareness, empathy, and collective responsibility toward building a truly inclusive academic community. She emphasized that such initiatives serve as gentle reminders that inclusion is not an act of charity but a recognition of equal rights and opportunities.
The programme was also graced by Dr. Hema Gandotra, Department of Sociology, Sh. Ashwin Kumar Khushwaha, Department of Library and Information Science, and Sh. Muneer, Sign Language Interpreter whose presence added further encouragement and significance to the occasion.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from scholars, and students from various departments of the University. Attendees appreciated the initiative for amplifying the voices and talents of persons with disabilities and for reinforcing the University's commitment to accessible and inclusive growth. The programme was ably conducted by Ms. Purvi Verma, Research Scholar from the Department of Home Science, JU.
