- DC calls for collective action to curb drug abuse
KATHUA: The District Administration Kathua today organised a Training Programme for field functionaries including Anganwari and ASHA workers under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan here at Degree College for Women (GDCW).
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma, who emphasised the urgent need for collective and coordinated efforts to eradicate the menace of drug addiction from society. He underscored the pivotal role of Anganwadi Workers and ASHA Workers, terming them as frontline ambassadors who remain closely connected with households at the grassroots level. “If field workers are able to guide and protect even two individuals from falling prey to drug abuse, it would be a significant achievement in furthering the mission of a drug-free society,” he said.
The programme was attended by the Principal host College Dr. Savi Behl; District Programme Officer ICDS Mohammad Syed Khan; Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vijay Raina; Mental Health and Drug De-addiction Expert, Dr. Anayat Mir (Resource Person); Child Development Project Officer Haqikat Singh and Tehsil Social Welfare Officer Vishav Bandhu Sharma among others.
Resource Person Dr. Anayat Mir conducted an in-depth training session for the field functionaries, focusing on early identification of substance use, counselling methods, preventive strategies at the community level, ways to support affected individuals and their families and measures to reduce social stigma associated with drug dependence. He highlighted that the involvement of field-level functionaries is crucial in building awareness, strengthening early intervention and connecting vulnerable individuals with a timely support system.
Earlier, the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by a welcome address by District Social Welfare Officer Varun Kumar Choudhary. He highlighted the purpose of the training and the significance of involving ground-level workers in sustained community awareness campaigns against drug abuse.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks presented by District Mission Coordinator Itika Mahajan. She appreciated the active participation of trainers and field workers in furthering the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at the grassroots level. Refreshments were served to all participants at the end of the event.
