AWANTIPORA: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), today organized a special get-together to celebrate the University’s receipt of the prestigious 6th National Water Award in the category of ‘Best Institution (other than school or college)’. The award, conferred by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, in November 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, recognises IUST’s pioneering initiatives in water conservation and sustainable environmental management.

The celebratory program presided over by Prof. Shakil A Romshoo, Vice Chancellor IUST was organized by Prof. Abdul Wahid Makhdoomi, Registrar IUST, and was. The event was attended by University Officers, faculty members associated with the project, and key stakeholders including Er. Iftikhar Ahmed Kakroo and Er. Naseer Ahmed Kakroo, who played a significant role in shaping the university’s conservation model.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Romshoo congratulated the university community and highlighted that the recognition reflects IUST’s commitment to innovation-driven environmental stewardship. The Vice Chancellor acknowledged the contributions of faculty, engineers, students, and field teams whose collective efforts enabled IUST to establish a model of sustainable water management, particularly relevant for mountainous regions prone to water stress and flash flood risks.

The dignitaries appreciated the University’s sustained efforts and innovative programs in water conservation, observing that while the Valley is endowed with tremendous natural water resources, their scientific management and long-term preservation are critical for the well-being and sustainable future of the entire region. The award places IUST among the select institutions nationwide setting new benchmarks in water sustainability, ecological conservation, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
