SHOPIAN: District Legal Services Authority Shopian today held awareness programmes on five locations across the district on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The main programme was organized in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department Shopian at Town Hall Shopian.
The programmes were organized under the guidance of Chairman DLSA Shopian, Mehmood Ahmad Chowdhary and Secretary DLSA Shopian, Mudasar Farooq. The purpose of these programmes was to provide information to the senior citizens of the society about their rights, welfare schemes and legal provisions.
Chief LADC Shopian, Rafie Ahmad Ganie, elaborated on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and its significance in ensuring the welfare of senior citizens. He stressed the importance of taking care of parents and urged the participants to fulfill their responsibilities towards them while also highlighting the NALSA (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme, 2016, which provides free legal aid to senior citizens.
He informed the participants that senior citizens are eligible to receive free legal aid from legal services institutions as per Rule 19 of the J&K Legal Services Authority rules, 2020.
In addition, Parallel awareness sessions were conducted at LAC, Keegam, LAC Keller, LADC Borihallan, LAC Front ADR Centre Shopian in the district, where resource persons provided essential information to Senior Citizens on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The programmes witnessed an active participation of senior citizens.
