UDHAMPUR: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Udhampur team, comprising Chairman (Principal District & Sessions Judge) Virinder Singh Bhou and Secretary Dr. Smriti Sharma today visited District Jail here. Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel (LADC) Advocate Pawan Gupta, Deputy LADCs Advocate Atul Singh and Advocate Veney Singh Kotwal (Deputy LADCs) were also part of the visit.
The primary objective of the visit was to assess the jail's condition, focusing on the welfare of inmates and the effectiveness of legal aid services. Through interactions with inmates, jail authorities and legal aid counsel, the team aimed to identify areas for improvement and provide necessary support. The team assessed the jail conditions, focusing on living conditions for inmates. The team inspected the medical rooms, evaluated the availability of medicines and checked the food quality to ensure that the inmates' basic needs are being met.
The team imparted awareness to prisoners about access to justice, their rights during pre-arrest, arrest and remand stages, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for premature release and rights of under-trial prisoners. Discussions were also held about the upcoming Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) meeting scheduled on October 17, 2025.
The UTRC meeting is crucial for reviewing the cases of under-trial prisoners, identifying those who may be eligible for bail or release, and ensuring that their rights are protected. The team emphasized the importance of effective preparation and coordination among all stakeholders to make the UTRC meeting a success.
