JAMMU: The Psychological Counselling Cell of Government College of Education (GCOE) Jammu organized an enlightening seminar to mark World Mental Health Week. The event aimed to sensitize students, faculty members and teacher trainees about the importance of emotional well-being, stress management and early intervention in mental health concerns.

The Principal of the College, Dr. Jyoti Parihar appreciated the initiative of the counselling cell and expressed that mental health awareness is essential for nurturing emotionally resilient future teachers who can contribute to building a compassionate society. The program commenced with a formal welcome address by Dr. Ambica Kumari, HOD Psychology and Convener, Psychological Counselling Cell. She elaborated on the objectives of the seminar and the significance of observing World Mental Health Day in educational settings. The session was graced by Dr. Abhishek Chouhan, a renowned psychiatrist who served as the resource person for the seminar.

Dr. Chouhan delivered an insightful and interactive lecture on various dimensions of mental health, focusing particularly on the mental health of women and youth in today’s competitive and rapidly changing world. He emphasized that maintaining good mental health is not just an individual responsibility but a collective societal need. He discussed the role of positive thinking, emotional regulation, mindfulness and supportive relationships in promoting psychological well-being

Dr. Abhishek Chouhan highlighted how stress, anxiety and depression often go unnoticed in educational institutions due to stigma and lack of awareness. He encouraged participants to seek timely help and to foster a culture of openness and empathy toward mental health challenges. The talk also included engaging anecdotes, case examples and practical exercises that helped the audience connect deeply with the message.

 Faculty members, non teaching staff and students from B ed, M.ed and ITEP attended the seminar with great enthusiasm. The participants actively interacted with the resource person during the question-answer session, which added to the depth and impact of the discussion. The seminar concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Sonam Gandotra.
