JAMMU: The SC, ST and OBC Cell, University of Jammu, today organized a seminar on the theme “Remembering Bharat Ratna (Dr.) Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar – The Maker of Modern India”. Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the SC/ST and OBC Cell, University of Jammu, delivered the Presidential Address.

 He emphasized the importance of organizing such seminars regularly across various departments of the University to foster awareness and reflection on the ideals of Dr. Ambedkar. He further advised the Liaison Officer , to prepare a structured calendar for conducting such activities on a sustained basis within the University.

Prof. S. K. Sharma, Former Head, Department of Law, Dean Faculty of Law, University of Jammu, and Swami Chair Professor, Swami Vivekananda Chair, Central University of Jammu, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he offered a comprehensive perspective on the life and contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He described Baba Saheb as one of the most influential figures in Indian history and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. He underscored Dr. Ambedkar’s lifelong commitment to equality, justice, and the upliftment of marginalized communities, particularly the Dalits.

Emphasizing his relentless efforts to eradicate caste-based discrimination, Prof. Sharma noted that Dr. Ambedkar viewed education as a powerful instrument for social transformation. Through his visionary ideas and reformist approach, he laid the foundation of a democratic and inclusive India rooted in equality and dignity for all.

Ms. Meenakshi Slathia, Deputy Advocate General, J&K and Ladakh High Court, attended the seminar as the Guest of Honour. In her remarks, she reflected upon the remarkable journey of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, from his early life struggles to his enduring contributions to Indian society. She highlighted his pivotal role as Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution, and his visionary leadership in shaping the nation’s legal and institutional framework. She also drew attention to his significant contributions in areas such as women’s emancipation, labour rights, and economic equity, which continue to resonate in contemporary policy and discourse.

Earlier. Prof. Satinder Kumar, Liaison Officer, SC/ST/OBC Cell, University of Jammu, formally welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering, and highlighted the significance of commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, whose ideas continue to guide the nation’s democratic and social framework. The proceedings of the seminar were conducted by Dr. Parvinder Kumar, Coordinator, SC, ST and OBC Cell, while Dr. Tirth Ram presented the formal vote of thanks.

Among those present on the occasion were Prof. Seema Rometra, Director Law School; Prof. Pankaj Kumar, Hony. Director USIC; Prof. Haq Nawaz, Head, Department of Chemistry; Prof. Virender Koundal, Director DSRS; Prof. Romesh Kumar, Head, Department of Mathematics and Dean Faculty of Mathematical Sciences; and faculty members including Prof. Pawan Kumar, Dr. Shallu Sharma, Dr. Rashid Manhas, Dr. Ajay Taloor, Dr. Rakesh Attri, Dr. Vijay Shivogotra, Dr. Chinmoyee Maharana, Dr. Kajal Kalsi, and Dr. Ashwani Kalsi. Research scholars Dr. Md Yunis, Dr. Sikha Bharti, and Ms. Surbhi Pathania, along with students from various departments, also participated actively in the seminar.
