KATRA: Dr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), delivered an online invited talk at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa, on “Functionally Graded Additive Manufactured Parts for Sustainable Manufacturing.” His talk focused on the growing significance of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) developed via Additive Manufacturing (AM) in achieving sustainability goals across engineering sectors.

Dr. Haq presented a compelling overview of how FGMs enable gradual variation in material properties within a single component, reducing the need for multiple assemblies and minimizing material waste. He emphasized the potential of AM techniques in fabricating high-performance, recyclable, and application-specific parts for sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and energy.

Dr. Haq shared outcomes from several funded research projects conducted at SMVDU, particularly highlighting the mechanical and tribological performance of FGMs under simulated industrial conditions. The session was moderated by Dr. M. Nkosi and Prof. K. Gupta of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and witnessed active participation from faculty, researchers, and postgraduate students.

The interaction was marked by a lively discussion on material design, sustainability, and the future of manufacturing technologies, particularly in developing economies. In his message, the Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof. Pragati Kumar, noted that this event underscores the university’s expanding global presence and its steadfast commitment to cutting-edge research in sustainable and next-generation manufacturing technologies.

A Profound Loss: JK Monitor Mourns the Passing of Founding Chairman Dr. Priya Ranjan

We at JK Monitor are profoundly saddened by the sudden demise of our Founding Chairman, Dr. Priya Ranjan.IN LOVING MEMORY Dr Priya Ranjan

A brilliant mind who studied at Netarhat Residential School and graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur before earning his PhD from the University of Maryland, Dr. Ranjan chose to return to India and dedicate his life to teaching, research and social good.

His pioneering work in networked systems, AI, robotics and biomedical applications—especially computer-vision tools for early detection of cancer and heart disease—reflected his deep belief that advanced technology must serve humanity.

For more than 15 years at JK Monitor, he remained a loyal friend, mentor and collaborator, marked by rare humility, intellectual integrity and quiet generosity. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Priya, you will be deeply missed. Your life continues to remind us that knowledge finds its highest purpose in the service of others.
