AWANTIPORA: The Syed Mantaqui Memorial College of Nursing & Medical Technology (SMMCON&MT), IUST, observed International Youth Day 2026 on October 6with an awareness programme focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness among youth. The programme was organised under the Red Ribbon Club in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Control Society (JKACS), Department of Health & Medical Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, and the J&K Paramedical and Nursing Council.

The programme was conducted as part of the HIV/AIDS Awareness for Youth under the Intensified IEC Campaign, with the theme ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.’ The event was attended by students and faculty members of SMMCON & MT.

The programme aimed to sensitise the faculty and young learners about HIV/AIDS, its modes of transmission, prevention, early testing, treatment and the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination associated with HIV. Emphasis was laid on the significant role of youth in creating an informed, responsible and supportive society.

During the programme, awareness was created regarding the importance of obtaining authentic information on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), avoiding myths and misconceptions, and encouraging healthy and responsible practices. The role of youth in spreading accurate health information and promoting a stigma-free environment was also highlighted. The students also pledged to spread awareness and fight stigma.

The programme further reinforced the message that young people, despite belonging to different social and cultural contexts, share common aspirations for a healthy, safe and empowered future. Faculty members appreciated the initiative and emphasised the importance of continued health education and awareness activities within educational institutions.

The event was coordinated by Mubashir Bashir, In charge SMMCN&MT along with Sehrish Khan and Ms. Salma Amin. The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening HIV/AIDS awareness, promoting preventive health practices and encouraging young people to contribute towards an informed and inclusive society
