- From first-time learners to participants aged 90, the district’s assessment celebrates lifelong learning and brings Baramulla closer to its 99 per cent literacy goal
BARAMULLA: Baramulla’s drive to achieve universal adult literacy reached a historic milestone on Sunday, with more than 8,300 learners participating in the Foundation Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test (FLNAT) across 509 designated centres. Held under the ULLAS–Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, the assessment brought together adults aged 18 and above, reflecting strong community mobilisation and a shared commitment to lifelong learning.
Among the most inspiring participants were learners aged 85 to 90, showing that the pursuit of education has no age limit. Several centres took on a celebratory atmosphere, with learners arriving alongside their children and grandchildren. Refreshments and learner kits at some venues added to the warm, welcoming environment.
With an adult literacy rate of 98.63 per cent, Baramulla is working to cross the 99 per cent mark. The latest assessment could help advance that effort, subject to verification of the results. The turnout showed how community participation can turn literacy efforts into a wider movement—one that promotes empowerment, dignity and inclusion at every age.
