• Intensive water quality testing drive to cover drinking water sources, HGJ-certified villages

SRINAGAR: Additional Chief Secretary, Jal Shakti Department Shaleen Kabra today e-launched "Jal Gunvatta Parikshan Abhiyan," a 15-day intensive Water Quality Testing Campaign.

The campaign aims to intensify water quality testing of drinking water sources and villages certified as Har Ghar Jal (HGJ), with a focus on identifying potential contamination hotspots and ensuring timely corrective and remedial measures wherever required.

During the 15-day campaign, the Mission Directorate, Jal Jeevan Mission, J&K, will undertake overall monitoring, coordination and review. The District and Divisional Officers, District Programme Management Units (DPMUs) and Water Testing Laboratory staff will ensure effective implementation, sample collection, testing, documentation, validation and daily reporting of results on the Water Quality Management Information System (WQMIS) Portal.

The initiative seeks to bridge the existing gaps in water quality testing, strengthen digital monitoring and promote community participation (Jan Bhagidari). Awareness activities will focus on safe drinking water, water quality standards as per BIS 10500, water conservation and the prevention of water-borne diseases.

Special emphasis will be laid on sensitising and training community members, particularly women, in the use of Field Test Kits (FTKs) and reporting of test results on the WQMIS Portal. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities including placards, posters, pamphlets and audio jingles will further promote awareness and encourage improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices.

The campaign is expected to facilitate the timely identification of contamination, strengthen coordination among district administrations, engineering divisions, laboratories and village institutions and improve the overall effectiveness of water quality surveillance.

The Mission Directorate will also focus on institutionalising regular water quality testing beyond the campaign period. It will also ensure timely reporting and validation of test results while addressing the identified gaps through continuous monitoring.

Through this initiative, Jal Jeevan Mission, J&K, reaffirms its commitment towards ensuring sustained delivery of safe and potable drinking water and safeguarding public health across rural Jammu and Kashmir.
