SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Monday expressed its gratitude to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his swift intervention at the Government College of Nursing, Holenarasipur, where Kashmiri students had been forced to shave their beards. Following the Chief Minister’s intervention, the issue has been resolved, and we are thankful to him for prioritizing our concerns and addressing them promptly.

In a statement, the Association's National Convenor, Nasir Khuehami, praised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for championing the rights of Kashmiri students at the college. This prompt response prevented any negative impact on the student’s academic records or personal freedoms, enabling them to continue their education confidently and free from discrimination.Khuehami also expressed gratitude to both the Chief Minister and the Principal Secretary for Medical Education, Mohammad Mohsin, IAS, whose efforts ensured swift resolution of the issue.

The issuance of a show-cause notice to the Dean and Director of the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, along with a formal warning to the college’s Principal, exemplifies the government’s dedication to holding institutions accountable and creating respectful, inclusive educational environments. The Association commends the Karnataka Government for their principled stand and for setting a powerful example for educational institutions across India. This intervention reinforces the belief that all students, regardless of their background, should be free to express their cultural identity without fear of discrimination. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Karnataka continues to be a beacon of diversity, inclusivity, and respect within the academic community.

Khuehami emphasized that personal appearance choices, including the decision to grow a beard, are fundamental to individual identity and freedom. He stressed that no student should face discrimination or be forced to compromise on personal beliefs to access education. This intervention not only resolved the immediate issue but also set a significant precedent across Karnataka and the country. By defending the fundamental rights of Kashmiri students, the Chief Minister has reaffirmed Karnataka’s role as a leader in promoting tolerance, cultural respect, and justice within its institutions.
