- Hails increase in MBBS intake capacity
JAMMU: BJP Health & Medical Cell Convener, Jammu & Kashmir, Puneet Mahajan has welcomed the increase in MBBS intake capacity in Government Medical Colleges across Jammu & Kashmir, terming it a landmark decision that will significantly strengthen medical education and healthcare services in the Union Territory.
Mahajan said the enhancement of MBBS seats reflects the Government of India's steadfast commitment, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, to expanding quality medical education and building a robust healthcare system. He observed that the decision will provide greater opportunities to aspiring NEET candidates, particularly students from Jammu & Kashmir, who have long faced stiff competition due to the limited availability of MBBS seats.
He stated that the increased intake capacity will help produce more skilled doctors, address the shortage of healthcare professionals, and improve access to quality healthcare in both urban and rural areas. According to Mahajan, the expansion will not only benefit thousands of aspiring medical students but will also strengthen the Union Territory's healthcare infrastructure for years to come.
Mahajan appreciated the efforts of the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the National Medical Commission (NMC), and the Jammu & Kashmir Administration for continuously expanding medical education facilities. He said that the establishment of new Government Medical Colleges and the increase in MBBS seats reflect the Government's long-term vision of making affordable, quality medical education accessible to deserving students.
Highlighting the transformative reforms in the health sector, Mahajan said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India has witnessed unprecedented expansion in healthcare infrastructure through initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, the establishment of new AIIMS, new Government Medical Colleges, increased postgraduate medical seats, and modernization of health institutions. He noted that Jammu & Kashmir has been a major beneficiary of these initiatives.
While welcoming the increase in MBBS seats, Mahajan urged the Government of India to establish at least one Government Medical College in every district of Jammu & Kashmir. He said that despite the recent expansion, many deserving NEET-qualified students are still unable to secure MBBS admissions and are compelled to pursue medical education abroad, resulting in a significant outflow of foreign exchange.
He emphasized that establishing a medical college in every district would substantially increase MBBS seats, reduce the migration of students to foreign countries for medical education, conserve valuable national resources, and strengthen India's self-reliance in medical education. Such an initiative, he said, would also generate large-scale direct and indirect employment opportunities while boosting sectors such as healthcare, construction, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, transport, hospitality, and local businesses.
Mahajan further stated that district-level medical colleges would strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve access to specialized medical services, promote research and innovation, and serve as centres of excellence in medical education. They would also contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Jammu & Kashmir by creating sustainable employment opportunities and fostering regional growth.
Congratulating all aspiring medical students and their families on the enhanced MBBS intake, Mahajan urged them to make the best use of the expanded opportunities. He reiterated the BJP's unwavering commitment to supporting every initiative aimed at strengthening medical education, healthcare, and public welfare, expressing confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India will continue to achieve new milestones in making quality medical education accessible and affordable for every deserving student.
