In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

JAMMU: Sunil Sethi, Chief Spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir BJP and Senior Advocate, has expressed serious concern over the political approach of the INDI Alliance, questioning whether its confrontational politics is allowing partisan considerations to overshadow larger questions of national interest, internal stability and institutional responsibility.

Sethi said that democracy undoubtedly guarantees every political party the right to oppose the government, question its policies and organise peaceful protests. However, he maintained that political opposition must be distinguished from actions that could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions or create unnecessary instability.

He expressed concern that political controversies involving national security, constitutional institutions and India's international standing are increasingly becoming subjects of intense partisan confrontation.

Sethi said that hostile forces operating against India have historically attempted to exploit internal divisions, political disagreements and social tensions. In such circumstances, he argued, all political parties have a special responsibility to ensure that legitimate democratic differences are not exploited by elements seeking to weaken the country.

He called upon the INDI Alliance leadership to clarify its position on national security, public order and the need to maintain institutional stability during periods of political confrontation.

“Opposition to a government is a democratic right, but safeguarding the nation is a responsibility shared by every political party. Political differences must never be allowed to compromise India's security, sovereignty or constitutional institutions,” Sethi stated.

He further said that allegations of coordination between domestic political actors and forces hostile to India are extremely serious and must be supported by credible evidence rather than political rhetoric. Any specific instance of unlawful collaboration, foreign interference or incitement to violence, he maintained, should be investigated by the competent authorities in accordance with law.

Sethi emphasised that peaceful dissent and democratic protest are constitutional rights, whereas violence, intimidation and deliberate disruption of public order cannot be justified merely by invoking political opposition.

He also questioned whether the INDI Alliance was giving sufficient attention to constructive policy alternatives on employment, economic development, public welfare and national security, instead of allowing political confrontation to dominate public discourse.

Referring particularly to Jammu and Kashmir, Sethi said that the region's history demonstrates the importance of maintaining public confidence, communal harmony and a clear distinction between democratic disagreement and activities threatening national security.

He urged all political formations to exercise restraint in public statements concerning sensitive security matters and to avoid rhetoric that could deepen social divisions.

“Governments will come and go, political alliances will change, and electoral contests will continue. But the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India must remain beyond partisan bargaining. National interest cannot become collateral damage in political competition,” Sethi asserted.

He concluded by calling for a responsible political discourse in which vigorous opposition, constitutional accountability and national security could coexist without compromising democratic freedoms.
