In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri has accused the National Conference (NC) government of betraying the people of Jammu Kashmir by failing to deliver on its election manifesto and resorting to excuses about lacking powers. On completion of its two years, NC has nothing to offer to people which is why the government chose to remain silent on its progress.

Suri said, “The NC government is wasting people’s time by not fulfilling its promises. Instead of showing accountability, it is attempting to pass the buck to the central government. This is mere escapism.” He noted that the pledge of 200 units of free electricity for every household was reduced to a limited benefit for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, leaving the majority excluded. Industrial consumers, far from receiving relief, have faced higher tariffs, worsening economic pressures.

Suri further criticized the government for failing to regularize 61,000 daily‑wage workers, despite repeated commitments. “Educated youth were promised jobs, but instead the government outsourced employment, deceiving those who trusted its word,” he said. He added that the administration’s claims of limited autonomy are hollow. “Governance is about delivery, not excuses. The NC government’s inability to act on its own manifesto shows a lack of will, not a lack of power.”

Raman Suri stated, “The people of Jammu Kashmir deserve a government that fulfills promises, not one that hides behind excuses. The NC government must stop misleading the public and start working for them.” He said the most unfortunate is that powers have not been decentralized by holding elections to local bodies as well as Panchayats. The chief minister had centralized powers and not letting people be part of decision taking bodies through their Panchayats.

Ever since chief minister Omar took over the reins of Jammu Kashmir government, he has been ranting his demand of statehood and hiding behind it. Knowing that statehood has nothing to do with development and giving people an accountable government, he is hiding behind this demand which both the prime minister and union home minister have agreed to, but at an appropriate time. The BJP leader asked the chief minister to present before people his complete report card of two years of governance so that they could assess for themselves how far he has come to fulfil promises made in the elections.
