SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday marked the 79th Independence Day of the nation with great enthusiasm, patriotic fervor, and a deep sense of responsibility towards nation-building. In-Charge Director Prof. (HAG) Roohi Naaz presided over the ceremony and hoisted the Tricolour at the campus, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and service to the country.

The mega celebrations were attended by Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, Deans, Heads of Departments and Centres, faculty members, SHO Police Station Nigeen Hazratbal, Mr Showkat Hussain, administrative officers, security wing personnel, scholars, and students.

This year’s celebrations featured multiple contingents, including the Institute’s Security Wing led by Manzoor Ahmad with Mohammad Ismayil as Parade Commander, the NCC contingent led by 3rd Year Cadet SUO Shruti Prakash, and a special contingent comprising children of faculty members. The Director took the salute from the Parade Commander and inspected all parade contingents as they marched past.

This year, Security In-Charge Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat served as the Nodal Officer for the programme, while Dr. Janani L. conducted the proceedings with patriotic zeal. Addressing the gathering on behalf of Director Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, In-Charge Director Prof. (HAG) Roohi Naaz paid heartfelt tribute to the nation’s great leaders and freedom fighters.

“Today, as the Tricolour soared high and our parade marched forward with pride, we were reminded that freedom is not merely a legacy to cherish but a responsibility to uphold. We salute every citizen who contributed to our independence and those who work tirelessly to advance the nation’s progress,” she said.

Prof. Roohi Naaz, In-Charge Director of NIT Srinagar, said the institute has evolved into “a beacon of learning and innovation” in the Valley, with a role that extends beyond technical education to promoting civic responsibility and ethical values. “Our journey of nation-building is far from over. As engineers, scientists, educators, and students, we hold the keys to shaping a sustainable, equitable, and technologically empowered India,” she said.

Director also urged the campus community to address challenges in sustainability, equity, and innovation. She called on students and staff to rededicate themselves to the constitutional ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. On the occasion, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman said NIT Srinagar’s mission was not only to produce skilled engineers but also “responsible, empathetic, and patriotic citizens.”

“Here at NIT Srinagar, we carry that responsibility by striving not only to produce skilled engineers but to nurture responsible, empathetic, and patriotic citizens. Our students are the torchbearers of tomorrow, and we must equip them with knowledge, integrity, and values that will help build a stronger, self-reliant India,” he said.

Prof. Rehman also extended appreciation to the Deans, Heads, faculty, Guest of Honor SHO Nigeen Mr Showkat Hussain, and staff for their dedication to academic excellence and institutional growth.

The event concluded with a patriotic song by Nandini Bhatt, daughter of Dr. Manoj Kumar, followed by a group song, "Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain,” by NCC cadets. Later, faculty, staff, and students joined the official Independence Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hoisted the national flag.
