MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA: Germany is emerging as a highly preferred higher education destination nowadays, especially among Indian students. Nearly 59,419 Indian students are currently studying in Germany, marking a growth of 25–30% on a yearly basis, as per data from DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Maharashtra is contributing significantly to this trend, with an increasing share of students opting for Germany for higher education. This also indicates rising awareness and improved access to the German language, along with favourable visa procedures. This trend is quite visible among students exploring undergraduate or postgraduate pathways across various streams such as arts, engineering, management, and allied fields.

YES Germany, a Germany-focused higher education consultancy, has been working with students across Maharashtra through various centres in Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune’s Baner, and Viman Nagar, supporting them in navigating the process related to higher education specifically in Germany.

The growing appeal of Germany is also associated with well-structured advantages such as the availability of nearly 20,000 courses, strong geopolitical relations between India and Germany, and its position as a gateway to broader international career opportunities. For many students, studying in Germany is not just about education, but about accessing a wider global ecosystem.

According to Anuj Deshmukh, Director, “Maharashtra is a very strong region for Germany-focused higher education. Through our centres in regions like Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune’s Baner, and Viman Nagar, YES Germany has played a major role in mentoring and assisting around 700–800 students in going to Germany for higher education on a yearly basis. 60% of conversions are from the Mumbai region, while the remaining 40% are from Pune. Increasing familiarity with the German language is also a major factor behind this momentum.”

In addition to academic benefits, Germany is being highly considered due to its stable market conditions and relatively easier access to visas compared to certain other destinations. Students graduating from Germany can also explore various opportunities across European countries, further increasing its attractiveness.

As per Dr. Latika Chaudhary, CEO, YES Germany, “Germany is now becoming a highly relevant destination for students from Maharashtra, as it combines academic excellence, affordability, accessibility, and strong career pathways. Increasing awareness and familiarity with the language are also helping students feel more confident about choosing Germany.”

For German investment in India, Maharashtra continues to be the leading destination, further strengthening its position in recent times. As per Government of India data, the state accounts for around 49% of German FDI inflows between 2019 and 2024, making it the top recipient in the country. Initial estimates suggest around a 30% share over the last two decades, while the latest figures indicate an even stronger concentration of German investment in Maharashtra.

The Indo-German Chamber also plays a major role in this ecosystem, and it is the largest German Chamber of Commerce outside Germany, clearly indicating the depth of Indo-German economic collaboration. In Germany, the Maharashtra community is growing steadily, mainly driven by students and professionals from the state. With awareness steadily increasing, Maharashtra is emerging as a major contributor to India’s growing student movement towards Germany.
