• The only design school in Bengaluru and among a select few in India to host a curated, standalone exhibition on design and artificial intelligence

BANGALORE: Informed conversations and avant-garde work by students of School of Design and Innovation (SDI), RV University, marked this year’s Ellipsis – a curated and thematic platform that illustrated the vision, process and outcomes of learners’ engagement with design in a world rapidly driven by AI. School of Design and Innovation (SDI), RV University, is the only Design School in Bangalore and among a very few in India to do a curated show and that too a standalone show on design and AI.

Themed ‘AI: With, For, And Against’, the three-day exhibition held at the prestigious Bangalore International Centre showcased work by SDI students across all batches and disciplines, touching off insightful deliberations and debates over the entire spectrum of artificial intelligence.  The event was organised entirely by students, with faculty supporting them as mentors and guides across in terms of curation, media, display and logistics.  The sub-themes of the event were: Human-AI Dynamics in Design, Ethics and Empathy in AI-Driven Design, Reimagining Authorship and Identity, Sustainability in the AI Era, and Designing for Uncertainty.

At the opening ceremony, keynote speaker Dr. Shirdhar Marri, Founder & CEO, Flyfish.ai, and a PhD in Human-AI interaction, said: "As AI transforms the tools of creation, the designer’s role evolves — from maker to meaning-weaver, from executor to empath. It’s not about what we make, but why it matters.”

Echoing similar thoughts, Dr. Anuradha Chatterjee, Pro VC and Dean, SDI, who moderated a panel discussion themed ‘AI and Knowledge’, said, "We hope this exhibition will serve not as a demonstration of 'how to do AI in design,' but to interrogate design’s existential crisis, and find ways to respond without reacting."

Prof. Pradyumna Vyas, President-Elect, World Design Organisation addressed the students in the closing ceremony and said, "You should not compromise on three attitudes : Optimism, Sincerity and Integrity. You should keep your head on your shoulder and be humble."

The motif of the entire three-day event centred around expressions in favour of AI which propagated the message that AI as a powerful tool can independently enhance and transform the creative process, a narrative focused on letting AI assist rather than lead, and concerns such as ethical issues, misuse, biases, loss of authenticity and adverse socio-political consequences encapsulated the outcomes of the AI genre during talks and panel discussions at the event.
