AWANTIPORA: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) concluded a two-day Training and Capacity Building Workshop on Integrated Water Management and Flood Risk Reduction. The event was jointly organized by the Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR), Department of Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change (DESCC), and Department of Planning and Geomatics, IUST, in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (DDMRRR), Government of J&K.

The second day featured brainstorming sessions chaired by Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST, where participants deliberated on diverse aspects of flood risk reduction. Discussions were led by Prof. Javed Hussain Mir on strategies for addressing urban flooding; Dr. G. N. Qasba, Former Commissioner SMC, on enhancing community preparedness and coordination; Prof. Humayun Rashid on the role of wetlands in flood mitigation and groundwater recharge; and Prof. Muzaffar Ahmad on bridging gaps in preparedness and planning for future flood management.

A concluding panel discussion, chaired by Prof. Romshoo, reflected on lessons from the 2014 floods and emphasized the need for an integrated approach that blends scientific research, infrastructural development, policy support, and community engagement for building a disaster-resilient Jammu and Kashmir. A technical session by Dr. Yasir Altaf (DESCC) provided a historical overview of floods in Kashmir, underscoring recurring devastations and persistent risks post-2014. The workshop ended with a valedictory session chaired by Prof. Romshoo, during which certificates were distributed in presence of Ms. Snowber Jameel, Deputy Secretary DDMRRR, and other dignitaries, marking the successful completion of this important initiative.
