JAMMU: Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana today highlighted the important role of the private transport industry in easing the lives of people by ensuring transport facilities, saying there has to be a fool-proof mechanism with regard to enforcing regulations and redressing grievances.

Interacting with a delegation of over 300 members of the All J&K Transport Welfare Association, led S. Ajit Singh and Mr Vijay Singh Chib, along with the Presidents of all the Transport Unions of J&K UT, Mr Rana assured while their genuine demands would be taken up at appropriate forum for earnest consideration, they too should cooperate the administration in adhering the norms for the general interest of the travelling and commuting public, vehicle pliers and smooth traffic management.

The delegation, inter-alia, raised the issues pertaining to the obtaining practice of e-challaning by the Traffic Department, saying this should not be just  to meet targets at the cost of vehicle commuters. They said while the e-challaning system seems to be of international standards, the road infrastructure, chowks, and crossings are of very low standard. If such systems are to be applied, there must be the best infrastructure in place as well, they argued.

The delegation called for streamlining the policies of the government and the Traffic Department to make these transport operators friendly. They sought amends in the current regulations and enforcement practices, saying due care should be taken for the  needs and rights of the citizens.

The delegation expressed serious apprehensions about the   inconsistent implementation of traffic laws and regulations, saying these could lead to unequal treatment of individuals. They stressed the need for strengthening the public trust in the system.

The delegation sought a dialogue between the transporters and the departments concerned for resolving the issues at the earliest. Mr Rana assured that this will be taken up with all the concerned.
