SRINAGAR: To help them learn the news production process, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organised an industrial tour for its students to Rising Kashmir office at Press Enclave.

Students were given a tour of various sections of the news organisation, including news room, editorial section, layout section, multi-media room, IT section, advertising and marketing section, and administrative section. The aim of the tour was to help the students understand organisational structure of daily newspapers as well functioning of various departments.

Meanwhile, students interacted with senior reporters, editors and layout designers of the organisation. While interacting with students, chief reporter, Rising Kashmir, Irfan Yattoo, shared some practical tips on reporting with the students. Sub-editor of the organisation, Farzana Syed, deliberated upon the significance of editing in news production, wherein only verified and ready-to-print content reaches the audience.

Among others who interacted with students included Umar Raina, senior reporter, Sameer Bhat, chief layout designer, Shafat Malik, beat reporter and Mir Shaista Zehra, multimedia reporter. The tour was coordinated by Dr. Rabia Noor, Assistant Professor, DJMC, IUST, was a part of the industry-connect initiative of IUST.

A brilliant mind who studied at Netarhat Residential School and graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur before earning his PhD from the University of Maryland, Dr. Ranjan chose to return to India and dedicate his life to teaching, research and social good.

His pioneering work in networked systems, AI, robotics and biomedical applications—especially computer-vision tools for early detection of cancer and heart disease—reflected his deep belief that advanced technology must serve humanity.

For more than 15 years at JK Monitor, he remained a loyal friend, mentor and collaborator, marked by rare humility, intellectual integrity and quiet generosity.
