JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies (CWS), University of Jammu, in collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), organized an awareness programme titled “Say No to Drugs: Building Legal Awareness and Safe Choices” under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). The programme aimed to educate students about the harmful effects of drug abuse, its legal implications, and the importance of making informed and responsible life choices.

Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, graced the occasion as the keynote speaker. In her insightful address, she highlighted the growing concern of drug abuse among youth, its underlying causes, and its adverse impact on individuals and society. She emphasized the urgent need for legal awareness, social responsibility, and community support in combating the menace of substance abuse.

Prof. Nayyar stated that laws relating to drug dependence have undergone significant changes in recent years, recognizing drug dependents as victims requiring care, counselling, and rehabilitation rather than as criminals. She highlighted the importance of free legal aid services available for individuals and families affected by substance abuse, enabling them to access justice and necessary support systems.

She also shared important helpline numbers related to narcotics control, rehabilitation and counselling services, legal aid assistance, and organizations such as DAWN (Drug Awareness and Wellness Navigation), which work towards awareness and recovery. In addition, she informed students about various government portals that provide counselling support, rehabilitation resources, legal assistance, and information related to drug abuse prevention and recovery.

Encouraging students to remain vigilant and informed, Prof. Nayyar urged them to make safe, ethical, and responsible choices in life. She further stressed the importance of strong family values, mental well-being, and institutional support systems in helping young individuals stay away from substance abuse.

Earlier, Dr. Rajneesh Raina, Director, NIELIT, delivered the welcome address and expressed gratitude to Prof. Savita Nayyar for making the programme meaningful and impactful. He appreciated the efforts of the Centre for Women’s Studies in promoting awareness, social responsibility, and youth empowerment.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students, faculty members, and staff members. Dr. Saranjit Kour from the Centre for Women’s Studies coordinated and conducted the proceedings of the programme, while Dr. Disha Sharma presented the formal vote of thanks.
