JAMMU: The vibrant 3-day Ashakari Mela, organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) under the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, is in full swing at Kalakendra, Jammu. The event celebrates the rich cultural heritage, craftsmanship and culinary traditions of Jammu and Kashmir, attracting a large number of visitors.

The Mela features a wide range of traditional crafts, artisanal goods, and regional delicacies, offering a unique platform for skilled women artisans and craftspersons to showcase their talents.  Dynamic live demonstrations of crafts such as pottery, grass handicrafts, Basohli art and intricate Crewel and Sozni embroidery have been the highlight of the event, capturing the spirit of rural artistry and the cultural legacy of the region.

The event became a focal point for promoting the cultural richness of Jammu and Kashmir, while also fostering economic empowerment for women artisans. The Ashakari Mela will continue till December 16, providing an enriching experience for all and serving as a testament to the vibrant traditions of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mission Director JKRLM, Dr. Shubhra Sharma, highlighted the empowerment of women artisans through this initiative. She said, “Platforms like the Ashakari Mela enable women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to display their handcrafted products, connect with the public and gain confidence. This event provides a glimpse into the vibrant culture of J&K while giving SHG members an opportunity to shine.”

Dr. Sharma also emphasized the dual benefit of the Mela, for visitors, it is a chance to explore and purchase unique handmade items, while for artisans, it serves as a valuable avenue for recognition and economic growth.
