SRINAGAR: Reaffirming the Directorate’s  resolve to nurture grassroots talent and ensure equal sporting platforms for girls, Director General, Youth Services and Sports (YSS) J&K, Anuradha Gupta, on Thursday inaugurated the provincial level Inter-District Chess Championship at Sports Complex Wazir Bagh here.

The mega sporting event is being organized by the District Youth Services and Sports Office (DYSSO) Srinagar under the overall aegis and supervision of the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports J&K. The championship features participation across all age groups for both girls and boys, drawing student athletes from all 10 districts of Kashmir Division.
The inaugural ceremony commenced on a resolute note with a solemn pledge under the Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan.  Director General YSS administered the anti-drug oath to hundreds of young participants, physical education staff and officials, urging the student community to act as ambassadors of health and wellness by spreading awareness against substance abuse across every corner of the Union Territory.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Anuradha Gupta expressed immense delight at the enthusiastic turnout of young female chess players. Terming the young participants as "real champions and torchbearers of tomorrow," she stated that today’s women have repeatedly proven their mettle across every sphere of life.

“Our girls possess extraordinary intellect, focus, and strength. It is time for them to spread their wings and aim for the highest skies,” she remarked. She emphasized that the UT administration remains steadfast in creating equal sporting opportunities and empowering girls on equal footing with boys. She also extended heartfelt gratitude to parents across the valley for placing their steadfast trust in the Department by encouraging their daughters to compete in sports arenas.

Earlier, Joint Director Kashmir YSS, Mohammad Rashid Kohli, presented the formal welcome address. He underscored the pivotal role of chess and strategic sports in building analytical thinking, discipline, and overall personality development among school children. He expressed sincere gratitude to the Director General for her visionary leadership and keen personal interest in expanding sports infrastructure and activities across J&K.

The proceedings of the inaugural function and vote of thanks was presented by Azhar Hajini, Media & Publicity Coordinator of the Directorate. In his remarks, he highlighted the Directorate’s monumental milestone of engaging lakhs of youth across J&K through continuous sports initiatives. He attributed this massive outreach to the relentless dedication of the YSS field staff working on the ground.

Prominent among others present on the occasion were Deputy Director Planning Megha Bhogya, Assistant Director Kashmir, District Youth Services & Sports Officer Srinagar Ghulam Hassan Lone, along with departmental officials, activity conveners, observers and escorting contingent officials.
