In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family
  • Says; LOP suffering from ‘Abdullah Phobia’

JAMMU: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and Provincial President Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta, while reacting to what he termed a baseless and politically motivated statement by a senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP), alleged that the BJP was attempting to shield Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar amid serious questions being raised over the functioning and transparency of the Election Commission.

Gupta referred to the concerns reportedly raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi regarding the decision-making process and transparency surrounding the revision of electoral rolls. He stressed that any allegations concerning the deletion of voters' names and the exclusion of election commissioners from important decisions must be examined impartially and transparently.

He asserted that every eligible Indian citizen's right to vote is a fundamental pillar of Indian democracy and that any wrongful deletion of names from electoral rolls would amount to a grave injustice to citizens. He called for complete transparency, accountability and a fair investigation into any substantiated allegations concerning the electoral process.

Taking a dig at the BJP's local leadership, particularly the Leader of Opposition, Gupta said that they appeared to be suffering from what he described as “Abdullah phobia.” Instead of addressing public concerns and presenting constructive arguments, he alleged, BJP leaders were resorting to politically motivated statements and fabricated narratives to target the National Conference leadership.

Gupta further alleged that the BJP had misused its influence and resources during elections in Jammu and Kashmir, deploying money power and muscle power in an attempt to influence the electorate. However, he maintained that the politically conscious people of Jammu and Kashmir had demonstrated their democratic resolve and could not be misled by such tactics.

Reiterating his party's commitment to democratic values, Gupta said that the National Conference would continue to defend the constitutional rights of the people, demand accountability from constitutional institutions and expose attempts to undermine the democratic mandate of Jammu and Kashmir.

He urged the Election Commission to ensure that every eligible voter was included in the electoral rolls and that the credibility, independence and impartiality of the electoral process remained beyond question.
