JAMMU: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu (CUJ), under the patronage of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain, conducted a comprehensive two-day event, Ecogiri-2026 in celebration of World Ozone Day. The event, held across the DD Building and the Aryabhatta Building, aimed to foster deep environmental consciousness among youth, advocate for sustainable living practices, and highlight the critical global efforts required to preserve the stratospheric ozone layer.

The event highlighted the official global theme for World Ozone Day 2026, "Global Action for a Cooler Planet – Celebrating 10 Years of Sustainable Cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol," emphasizing the international frameworks guiding local ecological action. In a major highlight of the two-day initiative, the students of the Department of Environmental Sciences uniquely conceptualized and hosted an innovative exhibition featuring products created entirely from waste materials.

Showcasing practical entrepreneurship aligned with sustainability, the students successfully sold these handcrafted eco-friendly items, decorative pieces, and household utilities to visitors, effectively demonstrating the commercial viability of a circular economy. The event witnessed an overwhelming response from students, research scholars, and faculty members across various departments, all uniting under the banner of ecological preservation.

Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor actively interacted with the students at their respective stalls, taking a keen interest in their creative processes. He deeply encouraged their entrepreneurial spirit and scientific ingenuity, praising their dedication to finding practical solutions to environmental challenges. Prof. Richa Kothari, Head of the Department (HoD) of Environmental Sciences, formally welcomed the dignitaries and outlined the core objectives of ‘Ecogiri-2026’. She emphasized that the primary goal of the event is to bridge the gap between academic environmental science and real-world execution.

Prof. Kothari highlighted that practical skills, such as converting waste into commercial assets, empower students to become proactive leaders in environmental preservation and sustainable lifestyle transitions. Prof. Sunil Dhar, Dean, School of Life Sciences; Prof. Deepak Pathania, Dr. Ankit Tandon, Dr. Shweta Yadav, and Dr. Dinesh Kumar were also present. A key highlight of the concluding session was the official release of the quarterly departmental magazine, "Envirosphere".

The publication was unveiled by the Head of the Department Prof. Richa Kothari along with the faculty members and the editorial team, marking another significant milestone in the department's academic journey. The successful management and execution of the diverse events across both days were smoothly coordinated by the student coordinators.
