JAMMU: The Law School, University of Jammu, organized an interactive session to commemorate World Mental Health Day 2025, focusing on the critical intersection of mental health and law. The event, held under the guidance of Prof. Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, aimed to inculcate empathy and understanding among first-semester students.

The session began with a formal welcome address by Dr. Monika Bhardwaj, who introduced Shri Subash Gupta, Former Judge and Member of the J&K Public Service Commission, as the keynote speaker. He delivered an insightful address emphasizing the relevance of the 2025 theme to recent humanitarian crises in Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the importance of supporting mental well-being, particularly in the face of natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies.

Shri Gupta’s discussion encompassed the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, and its alignment with international human rights standards, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He also explored various civil and criminal laws protecting persons of unsound mind.

The session concluded with a call to build a more empathetic legal system by translating statutory provisions into tangible support mechanisms. A dynamic Q&A session and active faculty participation enriched the discussion. Dr. Nitan Sharma, Assistant Professor, coordinated the session and presented the vote of thanks.
