JAMMU: Marking a significant milestone in the evolution of undergraduate education, the University of Jammu today organised an Open House for the incoming fourth batch of its flagship “Design Your Degree” (DYD) programme. Held at the University campus, the event served as an important interface for prospective students and their parents to understand the innovative academic framework offered under this unique four-year initiative.

The session commenced with Prof. Sadaf Shah, Associate Director, Skill, Incubation, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (SIIEDC), formally introducing the faculty mentors to the gathering. Prof Shah also provided a comprehensive overview of the DYD framework, highlighting the programme’s close alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. She elaborated on its interdisciplinary approach, which enables students to transcend conventional departmental boundaries and design a personalised, skill-oriented academic pathway.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. K.S. Charak discussed the core philosophy behind the “Design Your Degree” initiative. In his address, he emphasised the University’s shift towards student-led academic journeys and highlighted how the programme fosters the holistic development of learners. He urged attendees to move beyond traditional educational silos and embrace a curriculum that prioritises student agency and flexibility.

A major highlight of the Open House was the interactive session in which prospective students and their parents engaged directly with a panel of faculty mentors, including Prof. K.S. Charak, Prof. Jatinder Manhas, Prof. Shallu Sehgal, Dr. Chinmoyee Maharana and Dr. Sarika Verma. The panel addressed detailed queries related to admission procedures, credit flexibility and the integration of professional skill sets within the degree structure.

The programme was smoothly coordinated by the students and faculty members associated with the initiative. The event concluded with a vibrant interaction between prospective candidates and students from the senior DYD batches, who shared their first-hand experiences of navigating the flexible curriculum and offered practical insights into the programme’s real-world outcomes.

As the University of Jammu continues to reimagine the undergraduate experience, the event underscored its commitment to fostering an academic environment where intellectual depth meets functional versatility.
