KATRA: The Board of Cultural Activities (BCA), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), organized the staging of Rangyug’s much- acclaimed Dogri play Chanchlo at the Matrika Auditorium. The audience comprised faculty members, students, theatre enthusiasts, members of the cultural fraternity, and dignitaries. Dr. Rakesh Thusoo, President BCA, and Dr. Rahul facilitated the guests, while the smooth conduct of the event was ensured by SMVDU’s cultural clubs Aayojan and Prishtbhoomi.
Chanchlo, originally written in Hindi by eminent playwright Nadira Zaheer Babbar (Sakubai) and adapted into Dogri by RJ Dr. Juhie Mohan, was designed and directed by veteran theatre personality Shri Deepak Kumar. The gripping 90-minute performance by RJ Dr. Juhie Mohan held the audience spellbound with her commanding stage presence and emotionally charged portrayal of the lead character. Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. Pragati Kumar, hailed the initiative, remarking: “We are delighted to host Rangyug and their remarkable production Chanchlo.
Theatre has the power to not only entertain but also to sensitise society to deeper issues. This play has highlighted unspoken struggles while celebrating the strength of the Dogri language. Such initiatives enrich the cultural environment of our university and inspire students to engage with the arts and carry forward the responsibility of preserving our linguistic and cultural heritage.” Director of Rangyug, Shri Deepak Kumar, stated: “Chanchlo is not just the story of one woman but of countless voices from the margins.
Through this play, Rangyug attempts to hold a mirror to society, encouraging reflection and collective responsibility. We are grateful to SMVDU for providing this platform and to the students and faculty for their overwhelming response.” The story of Chanchlo portrays the resilience and struggles of a domestic worker navigating displacement, exploitation, and survival, making it both a poignant theatrical experience and a strong commentary on contemporary social realities. The performance was received with a standing ovation and heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging Rangyug’s efforts in preserving and promoting Dogri language and culture.
