SRINAGAR: In a sweeping, multi-district enforcement drive, the Jammu & Kashmir Police has significantly intensified its operations against drug trafficking, illegal mining, and related criminal activities across the کشمیر Valley, combining strict law enforcement with community-driven awareness initiatives.
Senior officers, including DIG North Kashmir Range, conducted a comprehensive review of the security scenario, crime trends, and anti-drug efforts during a visit to Baramulla, underlining the department’s continued focus on dismantling narcotics networks. Strengthening investigative capabilities, the Range Police Headquarters in Srinagar also concluded a two-day specialised training programme on handling NDPS cases.
As part of the sustained crackdown, police arrested seven drug peddlers across Anantnag, Sopore, Baramulla, and Awantipora, while also carrying out multiple narco raids in Awantipora and Kulgam with the assistance of K9 squads. In a major action in Srinagar, authorities demolished an illegal structure linked to a notorious drug peddler, signalling a zero-tolerance approach.
Efforts to curb drug cultivation saw the destruction of illegal opium poppy crops in Anantnag and Kulgam, with cases registered accordingly. In a notable step towards stricter monitoring, police in Anantnag also fitted a GPS anklet on a bailed-out NDPS accused to track movements.
Parallel action against illegal mining led to the seizure of multiple vehicles and registration of FIRs in Shopian and Pulwama, while enforcement teams in Sopore sealed yet another illegal medical store as part of ongoing compliance checks.
Alongside enforcement, police intensified public outreach through rallies, awareness programmes, and community partnerships across Baramulla, Handwara, Awantipora, Shopian, Ganderbal, and Uri. Initiatives included anti-drug campaigns in collaboration with local chemists, school-based awareness sessions, and even a marathon in Tangmarg aimed at engaging youth.
Further strengthening preventive measures, two drug peddlers were detained under preventive detention laws in Srigufwara, Anantnag.
The coordinated operations reflect a comprehensive strategy by J&K Police—combining enforcement, prevention, and public participation—to combat the growing menace of drugs and associated crimes across the region.
