The Survival Fight of JK Monitor: For 16 years, JK Monitor has chronicled Jammu and Kashmir with integrity. Since 2010, I have steered its newsroom alongside our visionary Founding Chairman, Dr. Priya Ranjan (IIT Kharagpur alumnus, University of Maryland Ph.D.). His tragic demise in October 2026 left a severe financial and operational vacuum. Without urgent support, our 24/7 news portal risks permanently shutting down after November 2026, remaining only as a static digital archive. We appeal to well-wishers to extend a helping hand to keep our active newsroom alive. Support Us: WhatsApp: +91-9906103001 | Email: journalistajmerwani@gmail.com
  • Experts highlight importance of one health approach

SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organised a one-day programme titled “One Health Warrior – Youth Engagement Program” on November 3 to sensitise students about the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.

The programme was organised by the Regional Coordinating Institute (RCI), Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), NIT Srinagar, in collaboration with the National One Health Mission (NOHM), Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and the Centre for Rural Development and Technology. The event was held to mark One Health Day.

The programme was conducted from 3 pm to 5 pm through an online webinar, with a simultaneous gathering at the Common Hall of NIT Srinagar. The webinar featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Ajay K. Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Dean Research and Consultancy, Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir; Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz; Dr. Shahid Saleem; HOD IT, Dr. Shabir Ahmad Sofi, Dr. Tanveer Rasool, Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, Technical Coordinator; and other faculty members attended the programme.

The programme focused on creating awareness among young people about the One Health approach, which recognises the close relationship between human health, animal health and environmental well-being.

It also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and youth participation in addressing emerging health challenges. Prof. Shameem Ahmad Lone, Regional Coordinator, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, highlighted the importance of involving young people in the One Health initiative.

He emphasised that human health cannot be viewed in isolation from animal and environmental health, and stressed the need for greater awareness, interdisciplinary collaboration and community participation.

Prof.  Lone further said educational institutions have an important role in preparing students to understand and contribute to the One Health approach. Around 100 students from various departments of NIT Srinagar attended the programme and participated in the interactive sessions and live One Health quiz competition. The participation reflected students' interest in understanding the links between human, animal and environmental health.

A live One Health quiz competition and interactive session were among the key highlights of the event. Attractive prizes worth up to Rs 10,000 were announced for quiz winners, while participation certificates were provided to registered participants.

The initiative aimed to encourage students from diverse academic disciplines to understand the significance of the One Health framework and their role in promoting healthier communities and a sustainable environment.
