SRINAGAR: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Kashmir, the *Rotary Club of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), SDRF and various civil society organisations, observed World Cleanup Day by forming a massive human chain across the iconic Dal Lake*, sending a strong message for the protection and conservation of Kashmir’s water bodies.

Students, Rotarians, volunteers and community members participated in the initiative, which brought together *Green Valley Educational Institute, Paramount High School, Team Red, Kashmir Concern, Buchwara Mohallah Committee and PSAJK, with support from the civil and police administration.*

The human chain stretched along the Dal Lake area, symbolising collective responsibility towards preserving Kashmir’s precious water resources. It was the first time that such a human chain was created across Dal Lake to mark World Cleanup Day in Kashmir.

Speaking on the occasion, *Chief Guest Shri M.Y. Tarigami, Hon’ble MLA and Chairman, Environmental Committee on Legislation, said that the initiative carried a message far beyond the formation of a human chain*.

“This is not only a human chain; it is a human responsibility to save our water bodies. Dal Lake belongs to all of us, and its protection requires collective commitment from the government, institutions and society.”

*Guest of Honour Shri Ajaz Bhat, SSP Traffic*, appreciated the initiative and said that such efforts provide a new hope for protecting Kashmir’s water bodies. He stressed the importance of public participation and awareness in addressing environmental challenges.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from hundreds of students, volunteers, Rotarians and members of the local community. The participation of young students was particularly significant, reflecting the need to create an environmentally conscious generation that understands the importance of protecting Kashmir’s lakes, rivers and wetlands.

The organisers expressed gratitude to the SMC, SDRF, civil and police administration, participating educational institutions, NGOs, community organisations and volunteers for extending their support.

*The event was supported by Athwass Retail*.

The Rotary Club of Kashmir said that the human chain was not merely a symbolic event but a public pledge to protect Dal Lake and other water bodies from pollution, encroachment and irresponsible waste disposal.

“*Save Dal, Save Kashmir” remained the central message of the initiative said President Rotary club of Kashmir Dr Touseef Bhatt*
