SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) here on Saturday welcomed and expressed its strong support for Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s statement about the soaring drug addiction crisis in Kashmir. In a statement, National Convener of Association Nasir Khuehami welcomed Mirwaiz’s timely statement and expressed strong support for his call to action.

He said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s statement reflects the growing concern among our youth regarding the drug crisis. "We need strict action against drug peddlers and robust measures to prevent the spread of this scourge."He emphasized the importance of a united front in the fight against drug addiction, stressing the need for comprehensive strategies that involve various stakeholders.

He pointed out that educational institutions and community organization’s play a crucial role in combating drug abuse. "We must work together to raise awareness, provide support for those struggling with addiction, and ensure that our youth are educated about the dangers of drug abuse," Khuehami added.

He said that a study reveals approximately 33,000 syringes are used daily by heroin injectors in Kashmir. The statistics are both deadly and alarming. Drug addiction is soaring at an alarming rate and concrete measures to curb is essential. If concrete measures are not taken at this time, this menace will have catastrophic consequences, engulfing thousands of youths. He asserted that drug peddlers should be meted out with the harshest punishment as provided under law.

When the sale of drugs is checked, it will naturally reduce drug addiction. In addition to strong punitive measures against the drug dealers, we need to focus on counselling youth who are trapped in the menace. We need to provide an enabling environment for them to steer clear of consumption of drugs, he added.

Meanwhile, JKSA In light of Mirwaiz's Umar Farooq’s statement, has called for immediate and decisive action from all authorities to address the drug crisis in Kashmir. The association has said that a concerted effort from all sectors of society is crucial to making significant progress in tackling this pressing issue. The association urged Veteran Islamic scholar, Founder and rector of Darul Uloom Raheemiyyah, one of the largest Islamic seminaries in Kashmir, Maulana Rehmatullah Qasmi to take the lead by bringing together all religious scholars across the Kashmir Valley to speak out against drug abuse and spread awareness among the people.
