JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri has expressed serious concern over the dengue-related death reported in Samba and urged the Jammu administration, particularly the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and other local bodies, to immediately intensify the anti-dengue campaign across vulnerable areas. He said the death is a warning that the situation cannot be treated as a routine seasonal exercise.
Suri said the health department undertakes preventive measures against dengue and malaria every year, yet thousands of cases continue to be reported, with some years witnessing record numbers. Jammu, Udhampur, Kathua and Samba remain among the districts reporting the highest number of cases in the Jammu region. He said the administration must therefore identify vulnerable and affected areas and undertake sustained, targeted action rather than limiting the campaign to formal or periodic exercises.
He called upon the JMC and all urban local bodies to immediately intensify fogging, manual spraying and anti-larval treatment, particularly in dengue-prone localities. Stagnant water, clogged drains, vacant plots, construction sites, discarded tyres, coolers and other mosquito-breeding sites must be identified and cleared on a priority basis. “Fogging alone is not enough; destroying mosquito breeding grounds through sanitation, source reduction and appropriate anti-larval measures must go hand in hand,” Suri said.
Suri also urged the health department, JMC, municipal bodies and district administrations to work in close coordination, maintain regular surveillance of dengue hotspots and ensure prompt action on public complaints. He said awareness campaigns must simultaneously be intensified so that people eliminate stagnant water around their homes and establishments. If dengue cases are expected to continue during the coming weeks and months, preventive operations must remain continuous rather than being stopped after a few rounds.
“A dengue death is not merely a statistic; it is a wake-up call. We cannot wait for thousands of cases before responding seriously. Every breeding site removed today can prevent an infection tomorrow,” Suri said, urging the Jammu administration to put the entire anti-dengue machinery on war footing and ensure that Jammu and other vulnerable districts receive sustained attention until the threat is brought under control.
