KATRA: The School of Biotechnology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) successfully organized an engaging invited lecture titled “Exploring the Fascinating World of the Mighty Microbiomes." The lecture was delivered by Prof. Shilpi Sharma from the Department of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 150 attendees, including faculty members, research scholars, and students.
The interactive discussion that followed allowed participants to engage with cutting-edge concepts and explore future research opportunities in microbiome science. The lecture provided deep insights into the structure, diversity, and functional significance of microbiomes across diverse ecosystems, including soil, marine, and host-associated environments. Prof. Sharma elaborated on how microbial communities influence human health, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and biotechnology.
She highlighted the transformative role of next-generation sequencing, metagenomics, and multi-omics approaches in uncovering the hidden potential of microbial consortia. The talk emphasized the interdisciplinary relevance of microbiome research and its transformative role in healthcare, biotechnology, and environmental sustainability. The event concluded with a felicitation of the guest speaker by Dr. Anil Kumar, Head, School of Biotechnology, who acknowledged her valuable contribution and inspiring interaction with the academic community at SMVDU.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Shafaq Rasool, Associate Professor, School of Biotechnology, along with the Ph.D. scholars of the Molecular Biology Lab under the able guidance of the Head of the School of Biotechnology. The proceedings were conducted by Ms. Tanvi Khoushal, Research Scholar, School of Biotechnology.
