SRINAGAR: The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Thursday took serious note of the prolonged and unexplained delay in the conduct of university examinations for B.Sc. Nursing Batch 2023 students enrolled in colleges affiliated with the University of Jammu. A large number of affected students have approached the Association seeking immediate intervention, stating that the continued uncertainty surrounding their examination schedule is causing significant academic, professional and personal difficulties.
The affected students commenced their classes in November 2023 and have been progressing through their academic programme under the University of Jammu. However, despite completing the requisite academic requirements, they are still awaiting the 5th Semester examination date sheet. The prolonged delay has resulted in a substantial academic backlog and raised serious concerns about the timely completion of their degree, internship and subsequent professional requirements.
JKSA added that such prolonged uncertainty is unacceptable, particularly when students have no role in the administrative or examination-related delays. Having fulfilled their academic responsibilities, they should not be compelled to lose valuable academic time because of delays within the university system.
National Media Coordinator of Association Mir Zubair, said that students cannot be made to suffer for administrative shortcomings or examination-related delays beyond their control. He said the absence of a clear examination calendar is affecting not only the immediate academic progression of the B.Sc. Nursing Batch 2023 students but could also have serious consequences for their internships, professional registration and career progression, higher education opportunities, competitive examination eligibility and employment prospects.
He said nursing is a professional course in which the timely completion of academic requirements is closely linked with practical training, internships and professional progression. A delay at one stage can therefore have a cascading impact on subsequent semesters, practical examinations, internships and, ultimately, the completion and issuance of the degree.
The students have also highlighted the disparity in academic progression between universities, pointing out that B.Sc. Nursing students under several other universities are already considerably ahead in their academic calendars, while Batch 2023 students under the University of Jammu continue to face uncertainty even regarding their 5th Semester examinations. JKSA believes that this disparity could place the affected students at an unfair disadvantage when competing for higher education, internships, employment and other professional opportunities.
The Association emphasizes that the issue is not merely about the release of a date sheet; it concerns the academic future and professional timelines of an entire batch of nursing students. Every further delay can disrupt subsequent semesters, internships, degree completion and eligibility for time-bound academic, recruitment or competitive examination opportunities.
JKSA urges the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, and the Controller of Examinations to personally intervene and ensure the immediate release of the pending 5th Semester examination date sheet, while notifying the 6th and 7th Semester examination schedules well in advance. The Association further urges the University to make all necessary administrative and examination arrangements to complete the 7th Semester examinations before May 2027, wherever academically and administratively feasible, so that the present delay does not result in the students losing an additional academic year.
The University should also issue a clear, transparent and time-bound roadmap for all remaining semesters, including examinations, practical examinations and other mandatory academic requirements, while ensuring effective coordination between the Examination Wing and affiliated colleges.
Mir added that students are not seeking any relaxation in academic standards, attendance, practical training or examination norms. Their demand is simply for timely examinations, a predictable academic calendar and equal academic opportunity. For students pursuing a professional course, administrative delays should not become a reason to lose an academic year or miss opportunities related to higher education, professional progression or employment.
