SHOPIAN: Rural Development Department Shopian today celebrated World Environment Day on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ at Mini-Secretariat Shopian in order to commit towards initiating desirable action for environmental responsibility. Students from various schools of the district participated in the celebratory events including Quiz, General knowledge and slogan writing contests based on environmental themes. The contests covered topics related to biodiversity, climate change, conservation, and sustainable practices.
Speaking on the occasion, Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Shopian, Dr. Nasir Ahmed Lone underlined the significance of observing World Environment Day and called for collective responsibility in preserving nature. He urged students to minimize the use of plastics, adopt eco-friendly habits, and actively take part in afforestation and cleanliness drives.
ADDC assured continuous support from the administration in promoting environmental awareness and conservation initiatives in the district. Other Speakers emphasized on keeping the natural resources including soil, water and air clean for future generations. The resources bestowed by nature are a collective legacy of all and must be kept free from degradation, speakers outlined.
Collective action keeping in view the rising pollution levels needed to be taken by all so as to overcome the problem of rising deprivation levels of quality water and air, it was further appealed.
At the culmination of the programme, ADDC distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of the quiz competition, general knowledge and slogan writing contests and other activities. He congratulated the participants for their knowledge, creativity and commitment towards environmental causes. The event was attended by Principal, GDC, Shopian; ACD, BDO, Shopian, officers from the district administration, teachers and students.
