SHOPIAN: As part of National Road Safety Month 2026, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), Shopian today organized a Road Safety Awareness Camp at Mega Fruit Mandi Aglar, Shopian under the nationwide campaign “Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan”, being observed from 01 January to 31 January 2026. The programme was aimed at sensitizing the general public, drivers, riders, traders and other stakeholders about the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic rules.
Key messages highlighting avoidance of overspeeding, mandatory use of seat belts, and wearing of helmets while riding two-wheelers were disseminated among participants. During the programme, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Shopian, Showkat Ahmad addressed the gathering and emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility. He said that most road accidents occur due to human error, negligence and violation of traffic norms and urged the public to adopt safe driving practices, respect traffic laws and develop a responsible attitude while using roads.
The ARTO further highlighted that simple precautions such as wearing helmets and seat belts, avoiding mobile phone usage while driving, and maintaining prescribed speed limits can significantly reduce road accidents and save precious lives. He appealed to parents, drivers and youth to act as road safety ambassadors and spread awareness within their families and communities. The programme witnessed active participation from members of the public and officials of the Motor Vehicles Department.
