SRINAGAR: Janta Dal (United) President G.M. Shaheen today issued a blunt and uncompromising indictment of the local government, declaring that tourism will not revive unless the Government of India intervenes directly, as the present administration has no roadmap, no vision, and no intent to rescue the tourism industry from collapse.
Shaheen said that after the completion of one full year of National Conference rule, the government has failed to present even the bare minimum of a revival strategy for tourism in Kashmir. “One year in office, and not a single coherent policy framework, timeline, or confidence-building plan has been placed before the public. This is not governance; this is abdication of responsibility,” he said.
He described the tourism sector as being trapped in uncertainty, policy paralysis, and administrative inertia, adding that headline management and cosmetic announcements cannot replace serious governance. “Tourism does not survive on slogans, photo-ops, or social media campaigns. It survives on functioning infrastructure, financial support, safety assurance, and long-term planning—none of which this government has delivered,” Shaheen asserted.
Emphasizing that tourism is the economic lifeline of Kashmir, Shaheen warned that the government’s negligence has placed thousands of families at the edge of economic ruin. “A vast majority of people in Kashmir are directly or indirectly dependent on tourism. The government’s indifference is not merely policy failure—it is a direct assault on livelihoods,” he said.
Shaheen appealed to the Government of India to intervene without delay, stating that only decisive central support and oversight can prevent further collapse of the sector. “The local government has failed on all fronts. Continued silence from the Centre will only deepen the crisis,” he cautioned.
Calling the situation deeply unfortunate, Shaheen concluded that the present administration has lost both direction and credibility, and is no longer capable of steering the tourism economy toward recovery.
